The Skirball Cultural Center has commissioned Los Angeles-based photographer Ken Gonzales-Day to create a new body of work about the presence of murals throughout the city. Surface Tension by Ken Gonzales-Day: Murals, Signs, and Mark-Making in L.A. features more than 100 original photographs that examine how murals contribute to Los Angeles’s unique visual identity and reflect the diversity and creativity of the city’s people. Through murals, communities honor their heritage and heroes, graffiti writers declare their presence, activists speak out about issues, and shopkeepers lure customers. In Los Angeles, artists from around the globe make their mark on a rapidly changing cityscape.
